Norwegian Cruise Line Limited was founded in 1966 as Norwegian Caribbean Line by a predecessor company to Kloster Cruise Limited. Until the mid 1960’s Kloster Cruise Limited was principally a merchant fleet company, and cruising was primarily a transoceanic service.

Then the company came up with an idea: Why not enter the tourist market with an entirely different kind of cruise!
The company took delivery of its first ship in 1966, the M.S. Sunward, based in Miami. The concept was one-class cruising in an atmosphere of informal luxury. This became the trendsetter of contemporary cruising.

NCL rapidly built a fleet of stylish new cruise ships. By 1977 the company had a total of 5 cruise ships and dominated the 7-day cruise market.  Throughout the 1980’s and 90’s, the company expanded its fleet into different markets, adapted to new trends, and maintained a strong image in the market with great success. NCL has maintained its leadership role with a series of innovative product enhancement programs and an extensive array of itineraries, entertainment, and activities designed to appeal to diverse upscale vacationers. NCL’s “Flagship” is the M/S Norwegian Dawn.        Nowadays NCL ships call to the four corners of the world serving more than 800,000 guests annually, and employs more than 10,000 employees worldwide.
